To examine immunological parameters of lupus erythematosus in psoriasis patients, Patcharin Janjumratsang and colleagues, from the Institute of Dermatology in Bangkok, studied sun-exposed skin psoriasis biopsy samples and serum samples from 300 psoriasis patients.
The average age of the patients was 42.0 years and 13.7% were female. The average disease duration was 4.8 years, the team notes in the Journal of Dermatology.
In all, 17 (5.7%) of the patients were positive for at least one immunological parameter. Biopsy samples from nine patients demonstrated bright continuous bands on direct immunofluorescence (DIF) along the dermoepidermal junction, which was graded 3+ and 2+ and showed immunoreactant immunoglobulin (Ig)G, IgM, and C3. Three cases showed more than one immunoreactant.
Five serum samples showed increased antinuclear antibody (ANA) levels, at dilution titres of 1:180-640. Three patients had a homogenous pattern, two a speckled pattern, and none a peripheral pattern. Five patients had anti-Ro antibodies, two of which were ANA negative and ANA positive.
No patients had anti-double-stranded DNA, anti-Sm, or anti-nuclear ribonucleoprotein antibodies. Ten patients with positive DIF were ANA negative, while five ANA-positive patients all tested negative for DIF.
The team concludes: "The incidence of psoriasis and lupus erythematosus coexistence is low and a baseline immunological screening test for psoriasis might not prove worthwhile."
