Figure 5-44 Inferior vena caval filter. An expandable wire mesh basket (arrows) has been placed in the inferior vena cava. This can be done by pushing the device out of a catheter and allowing it to expand in place. This will keep the large clots from traveling from the lower extremities and pelvis up the inferior vena cava and into the lung.
