An anteroposterior view of the upper thoracic spine in a paraplegic patient who was hit in the driver’s-side door during a motor vehicle accident shows lateral displacement of the upper thoracic vertebral bodies relative to the lower bodies. This can be assessed by looking at the line formed by the posterior spinous processes (dotted lines). Also note the lateral soft tissue swelling (arrows) due to the paraspinous hemorrhage resulting from the fracture. This type of fracture is difficult or impossible to visualize on the lateral view.
